  It varies from day to day John. There are more opportunities on a weekend or during big festivals than there are midweek. That’s not to say there aren’t any opportunities midweek though, they’re just a bit trickier to find.

  Possibly not Matthew. It’s best to look at the ‘Implied Odds‘ column to see if the bet you are placing is going to be profitable long-term.

      Generally speaking, you want the implied odds to be as high as possible, though it depends on your selection and their likelihood of finishing in the extra place(s). If you believe the implied odds are greater than the actual chance of your horse finishing in the extra places, it’s a bet worth placing. If not, leave it alone and look for another opportunity.

  It’s a little tricky with those as non-runners could mean the extra place is no longer being paid and therefore no potential profit for the extra place.
  
  There’s a table at the top of my Extra Place Strategy page that shows the standard place terms, which we can use as a guide.

Hi Matt,

Is there a limit to the number of horses per race you can back at each bookmaker? If I were to back 3/4 at one bookmaker would they restrict my account?

What is the maximum amount you can back for each horse? Or a better way of asking would be what is the maximum payout per horse that the bookmaker would allow?

  There’s no limit on the number of horses you can back in any one race, but backing 3-4 horses with the same bookmaker may act as a red flag eventually.
  
  In terms of maximum stakes, it depends on the bookmaker and any restrictions they may have placed on your account.

  Hi Dave. Do you mean if you hit Best Odds Guaranteed? If so, you would need to do that manually. You can see your potential profit figures at the bottom of the extra place calculator, so it would just be a case of adjusting the figures on the bookie side (left).

Hi Matt,

Am to assume that the 5th Favourite in odds would be the best horses to back here if only backing the one horse in a race, as it makes logical sense that they would place 5th more times than the other horses, what that % is l don’t know but l would imagine it could be as high the times a favourite comes first as that also makes sense, if dutching l guess if you back the top five horses in the race you’re strike rate will be extremely high.

  Just focus on keeping your qualifying losses low and you’ll hit the extra places over time.

Hi, I’m going to try extra places for the first time today. With limited funds to cover as many races as possible are you more likely to win the extra place on 6 places rather than 4 places would you lay 3 or 4 places on the exchange?

  Put simply, you’re looking to lay less places at the exchange than you’re backing at the bookmaker. For example, if the bookmaker is paying 4 places, you’ll want to lay 3 places. In that instance, you should be looking at a big profit if your horse finishes exactly 4th (the extra place).
  
  If a bookmaker is paying 6 places, chances are you’ll be laying 4 places at the exchange, which gives you two places to hit (5th and 6th) instead of just the usual one place.

I had a bet on the 4.00 at York today with Unibet and the selection came 5th. However my bet lost because there were non-runners. When the bet was placed it stated 5 places, oddscheckers stated 5 places and your website doesn’t indicate a number of runners restriction. When I contacted Unibet they sent me a link to their terms and conditions which does state that for 5 places to apply there must be 16 runners. These T&Cs are difficult to find on their normal website.

Why are the Dundalk races on here? They are all 16+ runner handicaps where the standard terms are 4 places at 1/4 odds.

Cheers, I took a look at the 6pm at Chelmsford which Paddy are offering an extra place for, but as you had alluded to perhaps as it’s midweek and not a huge race I’m finding it difficult to find any low QLs (everything was in the region of 20% of total stake which seems way too high?)

Had a question regarding the markets on Betfair but think it’s been answered already – we would always go for the win and “to place” market and ignore the each way one in the middle wouldn’t we?

  That’s correct. In theory the ‘Each Way’ market is a viable option but the odds are rarely as good as laying the ‘Win’ and ‘Place’ parts separately.

  It depends on your qualifying losses really Ian.
  
  If you can keep your qualifying losses down, there’s nothing wrong with covering more than one horse across multiple bookmakers.
  
  Otherwise just stick with the one horse.

Made a mistake today and lost £30.

Was thinking that William Hill would be 4 places for 11+ runners as per usual but it was only for 12+ then horse came 4th so I lost at bookies and exchange…

Just be careful everyone… don’t just double check, triple check everything.

Hi Matt,

Might be a stupid question but on your each way calculator, when you put in the each way stake value as say £10, presume that means you have entered £5 in the stake on the bookmaker which then doubles up to 10 when each way is selected? As opposed to placing £10 which becomes £20 if that makes sense?

  There aren’t any silly questions mate. It’s always best to ask if you’re unsure of something.
  
  If you enter £10.00, that means you’ve staked £10.00 each way at the bookmaker. That’s £10.00 on the horse to win and £10.00 on the horse to place, so a total stake of £20.00.
  
  There’s a small ‘?’ symbol next to some of the fields on the calculators which give you more information about what figure(s) you need to enter.

  Best Odds Guaranteed is only ever a bonus anyway Michael, it’s not something we should be chasing.
  
  I don’t think this is such bad news for us matched bettors. They’re doubling the amount of extra place races and increasing the amount of ‘Money Back as Cash’ offers, so I would say it’s swings and roundabouts.

how does one “select manually”? What is the process? I have seen the tools from OddsMonkey and PA – and they seem pretty excellent – I can’t see how a human could do it faster (or better). But lets assume for a second that one doesn’t have the tool – how would one select manually – what would be the process? A guide or blog article on this would be really useful!

  You won’t find bets quicker than using the premium tools that are out there Khalid, but it’s an option if you don’t want to pay the subscription fees.
  
  Simply plug the numbers into my Each Way Calculator using the ‘Extra Place‘ setting and see if there’s a decent profit to be had for a small qualifying loss. If you feel the odds you’re getting make it a profitable opportunity long-term, you can go ahead and place your bets.
  
  You’ll make a small loss most of the time while you wait to hit the big wins, so it’s important that you’re comfortable with those potential qualifying losses. Also, you’ll find more opportunities on a weekend and during the big meetings/festivals than you will on a regular weekday.

Hey Matt- hope all is well- I see you have jazzed up the site and- even more of a Brucie for me- you are now putting up extra place races the afternoon/evening before!. Hi, I for one appreciate this list being posted daily. Just thought I would say that 1 extra piece of info that would be very good to have, would be the number of runners scheduled to take part. I appreciate that you may not have time to update the page as non runners are announced, and it’s not too much hard work checking this for myself either, but that would be good to have posted alongside the other info.

Like you say, it’s just not possible to update the number of runners throughout the day, so even if I included the early numbers, you would still need to check them manually anyway.   That refers to the number of runners required for the extra place terms to apply Mark.
  
  If non-runners are declared and the number of runners drops below the amount listed, the number of places being paid will be reduced.

  The listings should be correct at the time of posting Michael. Some horses are declared non-runners between the time of posting and the off, so you’ll need to check that the extra places are still available before placing your bets.

  I think it’s worth stressing here that the information I provide on the blog should be used as a guide only. Mistakes do happen from time to time and you guys should be checking the terms of each offer before you get involved.
  
  That said, I’m pretty sure this one was 6 places at Paddy Power. I checked Oddschecker after seeing your comment and it was still listed on there as 6 places and there weren’t any non-runners as far as I can see. If you’re missing a decent payout I’d be inclined to get in touch with them and ask the question.

  Yes it does depend on the number of places and runners really. If you’re familiar with calculating your effective odds, you can use those to gauge whether or not it’s a profitable bet long-term.
  
  If you feel you’re getting much better odds than the chance of hitting the extra place, then it’s a bet worth placing. If you’re unsure, or you feel it’s borderline, just leave it and look for another opportunity.

Hi,

Could you add number of runners next to race please? I guess this could be quite helpful as chances are higher to hit extra place as there’s closer number of tu bets to minimum allowed per bookie. Not sure if everyone I’d find it quite useful. Thanks.

  It depends on the number of places and runners really, and how you feel about the bet. If you feel your implied odds are much better than the chance of hitting the extra place(s), then it’s a bet worth placing. If you’re unsure, or you feel it’s borderline, just leave it and look for another opportunity.

Hi Matt, old time Matched Bettor here – got heavily involved in 2006-2008 which supplemented my wife’s maternity leave and meant she could stay off work longer!

Haven’t done any matched betting for a long time and just done a few new offers thanks to coming across your site.

Quick question re these extra place offers – finding it really hard to find any decent matches. I take it that on a quiet day, I’m likely to find closer matches much closer to the start of the race rather than trawling through odds on the 17.05 at Thirsk at 9 in the morning?

  With the extra places, I think it’s a case of checking the odds every once in a while to see what’s available. It’s more the case that there are fewer opportunities on regular weekdays than weekends and during festivals.

How do odds boosts work with each way bets? I used a boost on william hill, my horse finished in the places but not the extra place and I’m trying to figure out why I’ve lost more than I expected. Could it be something to do with the boost only applying to the win part of the bet?

  My recommendation, though, is to lay the ‘Win’ and ‘Place’ parts of your each way bets separately. You’ll have smaller qualifying losses and bigger potential profits that way.

I’m struggling a bit with this, granted, I’ve only been looking for potential opportunities for a few days now (not intended to bet just yet), but the only time I see the rate % go to 95% or above is for a few seconds at most, usually about 1 or 2 minutes before the race, so the odds are going crazy.

I don’t see how I can be quick enough to place the back bet, and both lay bets in time to actually lock this in.

Is it just the races this week haven’t been good opportunities or am I missing something? Or, am I really supposed to be sitting around in the couple minutes before each race to see if I can be lightning quick and bag a good bet?

  It can be tricky finding opportunities on regular weekdays. Saturday’s and big midweek festivals are typically the best times for finding good extra place selections.
  
  I would avoid looking for odds so close to the off and instead try looking in the mornings. You may find more opportunities that way.
  
  I would also try not to look at the percentage rating too much. Instead, keep an eye on the ‘Implied Odds’ column, which tells you the odds you’re effectively getting on your selected horse finishing in the extra place(s). You can then use those odds to gauge whether or not a bet is worth placing. If you feel the odds of a horse finishing in the extra place are lower than your implied odds, it should be a profitable bet in the long run.

    I see okay thank you. I did actually have some luck this morning and got on 3 decent extra place bets, although none came up golden – but that’s the way it goes!
    
    So looking at the implied odds, does that mean that some knowledge of horse racing is required? I.e. if I had knowledge of the horses then I would be more accurately be able to gauge if the implied odds look good or not? Or am I misunderstanding?

      I don’t think you need any knowledge of the horses, Aaron, just a basic understanding of odds and the number of runners.
      
      It’s not an exact science. I would say it’s more about your gut feeling. The more bets you place, the easier you’ll find gauging whether or not they have value.

Are you sure about the extra places being applied at LiveScore Bet today, their website only lists Lingfield 3.25.

Maybe it’s changed thru the day due to non-runners.

Hi Matt, I have recently started to check offers available for each way bets in my local area with your very informative web site. I know they are updated very frequently and sometimes I can only check the next day. Is there a way of checking previous dates? My specific problem at the moment is the bookmaker is telling me they are only paying 4 places that was all they advertised, and I know I saw it was 5. The race in question was the 17:35 Royal Ascot on Sat 24 Jun for William Hill. Very many thanks for any assistance you may be able to give me with this, Jeff.

  I’ve checked my records and William Hill were indeed paying 5 places on the 17:35 Royal Ascot. As only 15 horses ran, though, the race didn’t meet the 16+ runner requirement for 5 places, so William Hill would have only paid 4 places.

  I always strive to ensure that the information you find on Matched Betting Blog is accurate, however, as with all offers, you should double check the terms yourself for peace of mind.
  
  I’ve had a quick look on OddsMonkey, as they keep a record of extra places, and they also had Saturday’s 14:00 Lingfield down as 5 places (11+ runners) with William Hill.

You need to check in house with the bookie as some ‘extra place races’ seem to be only for online bets. I had 3 each way but was told one of the placed horses extra place was online customers only so was only paid as a double.

Hi Matt, thanks for the updated list! Quick question regarding the Newcastle races today—if the field size drops right at the off, do most of these bookies still honour the extra place if we’ve already locked it in, or is it strictly based on the final starters? Also, I was reading about some old scandals and came across the film, ‘Poisoned Match’; does anyone know if this is a documentary about real-life race fixing or just a drama? I’m always a bit wary of markets where the liquidity looks off.

  Extra places are almost always based on the final number of runners at the off, not when you place the bet. If there’s a late non-runner and the field drops below the threshold needed for the extra place(s), most bookies will reduce the places accordingly — even if you’d already placed the bet earlier in the day. That’s why extra places are never 100% locked in until the race actually goes off.
  
  As for ‘Poisoned Match’, that’s a drama, not a documentary. It’s loosely inspired by themes around corruption, but it’s not a factual account of real race-fixing cases.

  It was a 29-runner handicap, so the standard each-way terms would have paid 4 places.
  
  If you placed your bet with a bookmaker offering an extra place on the race and they were paying 5 places, then yes, a 5th-place finish would have been paid out on the place part of your each-way bet.
  
  Unfortunately, we don’t keep a record of the extra places that were available once the races have finished, so I can’t confirm whether your particular bookmaker was paying 5 places.
